Update from Nisantha:
Hello everyone,
It is with great sadness that I announce The passing of my dear friend , our batch mate and colleague Siri Kannangara. He and his wife were on tour of Egypt. In Aswan Siri had developed abdominal pain and severe vomiting. He apparently had diagnosed his condition as bowel obstruction and wanted to return to Sydney. In transit his condition had deteriorated considerably and he had to undergo surgery in Dubai. The bowel had become necrotic extensively, surgery could not be performed. He had gone into septic shock and had succumbed to the illness.
I thought as physicians, we should know the reason for his sad untimely demise.
Siri left Sri Lanka soon after his internship, along with his wife , to New Zealand. After a few years in New Zealand he proceeded to The UK for post graduate studies. He did Rheumatology. Instead of returning to New Zealand he decided to go to Sydney Australia.
Siri arrived in Sydney with his wife and two daughters , with no job lined up. I do remember him telling me how he accidentally struck up a conversation with a senior Rheumatologist who offered him a job on the spot. The two of them continued to practice Rheumatology in Sydney. Siri also told me that the senior Rheumatologist was like his long lost brother.
Siri’s expertise in Rheumatology, his patient care , rapport with his colleagues spread far and wide. His services were recognized by the Australian sports teams. Siri was the physician for the Australian soccer team, cricket team and athletic teams. He accompanied these teams to the World Cup soccer, Cricket , and the Olympics. When the Olympics were held in Sydney Siri was selected as one of the individuals who carried the Olympic Torch.
Siri devoted Saturday morning to treat the Sri Lankan community located away from Sydney free of charge. These individuals paid Siri back by providing Sri Lankan delicacies. This was despite his requests not to do so.
The Australian government recognized Siri’s services as a physician , his services to the community and the sports teams . He is one of the few Sri Lankans who received the government honor. “The order Of Australia “.
Death is inevitable, and we all know that. However when death occurs with no prior warning it difficult to accept.
Piching and I convey our heartfelt condolences to his wife Nishi, his daughters Kishani , Shamila and Ayesha and all their loved ones
With love and fondest regards.

‘ Thank you Nisantha and Piching for the lovely tribute to Siri .
My Heartfelt condolences to his wife and family . May he Attain Supreme Bliss of Nirvana ..
Iam soooo sad, and I just cannot really get my head around it , as this news was sooo unexpected.
At least he passed away, while having a good time holiday travel .
Iam very proud and honored to say, that I am one of his mates from the Class of 64 .
He did our Class of 64 real proud, with all the accolades bestowed upon him in his adopted country of Australia — including the Order of Australia, Team Physician for the Olympic Team and many other Sports Teams, in Australia . etc .
But, the important fact is that he Never Forgot Srilanka and Her People … Truly, A Loyal Son of Mother Lanka with a Big Charitable Heart .
On a lighter note , he was my # 1 Baila Dancing partner at the Golden Anniversary held in SL – 2014, and I took the photo of him at the table, as he sat down to eat, after a real fun marathon Baila Session !
Only an Olympic Team Physician was able to keep pace with the Baila Kumari !
I will miss him come October Diamond Jubilee Celebrations .
More the reason, why we should attempt to meet up , as a Class of 64 , in Srilanka, one Last Time …
I did not want to be the first person to write on the blog, but, here Iam anyway, at 9.30 pm Ontario time — , just as the Post came on, and I happen to come along to turn the lap top off for the night .
Thanks again Sam and Nisantha for the Tribute to Siri .
I sign off with a Heavy Heart … Good Night .

Thanks Sam, Nisantha & Piching for the lovely tribute.
I will miss Siri. Now & then we used to have a long chat. Last one was few weeks ago. He was a bit worried about his renal problem but his mind was very strong to handle anything. He told me that the best thing he did was to marry Nishi & that she gave him strength, courage & happiness.
Siri & myself migrated to New Zealand & again to Australia in the same year.
From our batch, only three moved to Sydney : Siri, Naomi & myself. Siri lived about 30 minutes from my house & we used to entertain overseas visitors now & then.
I will miss him a lot.
Jean & I convey our heartfelt condolences to Nishi, Kishani, Shamila & Ayesha.
May his kind soul rest in peace.

Whilst death is inevitable it is hard to bear the loss of a dear friend. Apart from being batch mate Siri, to me was a friend and source of professional advice and support at the end of the telephone. He advised me a lot when my wife Daya had problems with her shoulder and directed us to see one of his students who was practising sports medicine at Karapitiya. I rang him from UK last year to get advice for for my nephew who was playing cricket in New Zealand. Siri as ever was ready with his advice and good wishes in spite of the fact that he was ill at the time. He talked about his illness and how he found a lot of strength from his wife whose care and love he described as wonderful. His generosity of heart was a great inspiration.
Thanks Banda and Piching for your comments about his sporting achievements and about his last illness.
It is my good fortune to have known a man like him.
Wherever he might be I hope he is at peace,
CJ

It is with Extreme sadness, we recieved news of our Dear Friend, Siri, passing away. He truely was a great guy, had lots of contact for Four Years, in Jeevaka. We visited him in Australia, about 28 years ago & had fun. He visited us in our home in USA, stayed for 5-7 days & did a lot of “MALL SHOPPING”, & took one big suitcase full, when he returned to Australia. He gave a lot of Phone Consultation & Advice to us on Orthopedic & Rheumatology issues.
Loss of a great man, compassionate doctor & a wonderful Human Being. May he Rest In Peace.
